Goodbye 2011

At the start of 2011 I was making clothes, only clothes, mostly for the children. Then my daughter asked me to make a quilt for her birthday. To be honest, it wasn't the first time, she asked me for her 4th birthday in 2010 as well. This time I had no excuse. So, running with her request that it be a blue and orange quilt, I made her a quilt for her birthday.

Once she had a quilt, everyone wanted one. My older daughter, my twins and my youngest. Once you make that many quilts in one year, you are either done making quilts forever or you are hooked. I was definitely hooked. I discovered quilting blogs, I joined a charity quilting bee and I started a blog!

I think my total number of quilts completed this year is 7. I also made teacher gifts at the end of the school year and for Christmas for all of the kids teachers. And Christmas presents for all of my family including nieces and nephews.

Here is a summary of some of my 2011 projects and finishes.

There are more but I think one of my New Year's resolutions might need to be to organise my photos on my computer!

Happy New Year!

I finished a couple more things on Christmas Eve. Six stockings, all of which seem to have disappeared and this table topper. My first piece of non-cross stitch embroidery.

I  was lucky enough to get two quilting presents for Christmas. This amazing stack of fat quarters that came via Backstitch, from an unknown member of my family as part of our family Christmas tradition.

And EQ7!!! I've been having a ball playing with it, there are a lot of little tricks to learn. Needless to say, I haven't been sewing because I've been playing on the computer instead!

Also, I can reveal the rest of the mystery present from before Christmas. My husband likes his new iPad cover, and the iPad that came with it!

Nearly there!

I've finished all but one of the Christmas presents I have to make. Although the potholders for my daughter may be mittens instead!

My youngest son is always carrying a bag around with his treasures in it so I decided it was time he had a dedicated bag.  This wasw a tricky project, I sort of made it up as I went along. It has a drawstring at the top and I still need some kind of fastening on the flap. The straps should fit him just right. I didn't put any pockets in it but it would have been easy to do. He loves this line of fabric because it has diggers and trucks and police cars!

I remade my older daughter's DS case too and it is now a perfect fit. I've done a lot of 3D sewing this week without patterns and I'm getting a good idea of how things go together and what you can and can't do.

This is a sneak peak of my husband's gift. Any more would give it away!

I probably won't be sewing much over the next week or so, so have a Happy Christmas!

Monday Madness

There are still a few gifts I need to get finished before the weekend. Today I finished up a phone pouch for the lovely lady who cleans for us.
I hope it fits her phone. Then I tried to make a case for my daughter's Nintendo DS. I measured it and added a little extra, but not quite enough. I needed about another quarter inch all around. This is now the home for our camera and I have the pieces cut (a little larger) for the DS case.

Finally, this is what I have been working on in the evenings. I love hand embroidery but have done virtually none except cross-stitch. This is my new hobby for when quilting is not appropriate! I need a lot of practise too so it will occupy me for a while!
That was Monday. The maddness involved 5 small children and a supermarket less than a week before Christmas. It wasn't pretty but we all survived, just!

Sleepy Saturday

Everyone was tired around here today, too much cold, wet weather I think.

I finished the quilt top for my baby niece. I've decided to bag it and then quilt in the ditch around the blocks to hold it together. I've ordered some new Aurifil threads so that I can do some hand quilting around the applique. I like the idea of machine quilting and hand quilting since the top was done with hand applique and piecing and machine piecing.

More Christmas Gifts

My husband has been sworn not to read this blog post. I have been working on Christmas presents for my boys (big and small). Out of six fat quarters I have made 4 pencil cases (one of my special triangular ones and the other 3 are regular flat ones). Now I am out of zips until my order arrives. Oh, and if anyone has seen my zipper foot, please send it this way! It seems to be lost in the void that calls  itself the Sewing Room.

I ran out of inspiration this afternoon though. Luckily my younger daughter had some so I helped her to do some hand stitching instead. Like most 5 year olds her ambition by far outreaches her ability but she's learning a lot and she perseveres for hours. I think she is aiming to make a quilt for a Christmas presents with my scraps! If it keeps her from fighting with her brother, I'm all for it.

I'll be warm tonight.....

when this comes out of the drier!

It has already been fought over, picnicked on and washed!

Monday Madness

I can't show you the finished Christmas quilt yet because I'm hand-stitching the binding. I started sewing it on the machine this afternoon and decided that I wasn't going to like it so I ripped it out.

Instead you can see the pencil case I whipped up this afternoon for my husband's work Secret Santa.

Wet Weekend!

This is what my sewing room looked like on Saturday morning. After spending most of yesterday pottering around in there it still looks pretty much like this!

Late yesterday afternoon my younger daughter and I spent some time with my Go!Baby and the scraps left from my Christmas quilt. After putting them all together I have a back for the quilt, which I think I like better than the front!

It was very windy outside, but I did manage to get a picture in the daylight! Not long afterwards it started raining, as you can see in the next picture, and it hasn't stopped since. I loaded the quilt up on the frame and have finished quilting it. I just need to bind it tomorrow. The quilting frame is fairly new and it has been living in the garage for the last 4 months. This is the third quilt I've quilted on it and I can never remember how to load the quilt onto the leaders. This time it only took 2 attempts before I had them all winding the right way!  I still need lots of practice, the front of the quilt looks great but the back isn't so pretty in places.

I'll get it bound tomorrow (hopefully) and have a completed picture.

Christmas Quilt top

I figure since this will be the only year we will be able to snuggle under a Christmas Quilt at Christmas time I better get this one finished. I used a Kona grey for the sashing and I really like they way it brings the quilt together but each block can be seen in all its glory. I had my doubts about this quilt all the way through but I really like the way it has finished up!

It is such a miserable day outside that I pegged the top to the curtains. I think I might leave it there for the afternoon and see how long it takes the kids to notice when they get home from school.

Now that I have finished this I really can't put off cleaning up my sewing room any longer. I need to set up my quilting frame and I have no space for it at the moment. So that is the task for tomorrow (along with making the Christmas cake!). With any luck I may be able to post a picture of the tidy room tomorrow, I'm not sure about a before picture, it's a bit embarrassing!

Christmas blocks

I've finished the remaining four blocks for the Sew Sweetness Christmas QAL. These last four blocks were all applique which is my least favourite type of sewing, especially on the machine. However, I lined them all up and got them prepared and I managed to finish them all today.

I also put a border on the very first block I made!

This is what my little one does while I sew and the big kids are at school!
He's sitting on two violins and he managed to put the flute together by himself. Soon he'll be able to entertain me while I  sew ;)

I'm off to play with the blocks in Picasa before sashing them and finishing the top tomorrow!

Finished!

I've finished the last 3 mug rugs! The kids have wrapped them all and they will be delivered tomorrow.

I did cut off all the dangling threads before we wrapped them. I have to say, I'm not usually a big fan of pink but I am loving the pink I used for the cake one.

Here are all sixteen of them in their glory.

Nearly there (or for those with small children, are we there yet?)

I'm getting a little sick of mug rugs! Mostly due to the fiddly piecing in the panda below! If I hadn't made him I would have been finished on Friday. Now that these are done I have 3 more to do, I should be able to finish them tomorrow! Then the kids can take them (and the mugs) to school and I can have some floor space in my sewing room again. The patterns for the panda and the ribbons came from Piece By Number where there are quite a few good freebies. I would not recommend the panda or the bamboo to beginners though.

Slowly, slowly

Most of today's sewing time was taken up with a tricky piece of foundation piecing. It isn't finished yet but I will persevere! I did get two more mug rugs finished today. The boat one is my own design and was foundation pieced as well.

Fresh Sewing Day and Small Blog Meet

I'm linking with Lynne at Lily's Quilts again for Fresh Sewing Day and Small Blog Meet. Last month was my first month at the Small Blog Meet. In fact I've only been blogging for just over a month and it has been fantastic. The support from the people who visit my blog is wonderful. In fact the mosaic below is courtesy of one of those wonderful visitors!

These are only some of the items I made in November. I still have lots more to do before Christmas too. I also have several quilt tops sitting around waiting for quilting!
